What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device. They are widely used to make websites work, to remember preferences and to understand how sites are used.
How we use them
This website does not use advertising cookies, and it does not ask you to log in. Our hosting provider may use strictly necessary technical cookies or similar technologies to deliver and secure the site.
We use Google Analytics (Google Analytics 4) to understand how the site is used, for example which pages are visited and how people find us. If you accept analytics cookies in the banner, it sets cookies in your browser, such as _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier, which last up to two years, and sends information about your visit (such as the pages you view, your approximate location and your browser and device type) to Google. We use this to improve the site, not to identify you or to show you advertising. Nothing is loaded from Google unless you accept, and you can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” in the footer.
Third-party services
If you follow links to other services, or use them from our pages, they may set their own cookies under their own policies. These include (but are not limited to):
- Google Analytics, for the usage statistics described above (only if you accept)
- Substack, for our newsletter and sign-up
- Google Forms, for our contact form
- Google Analytics, for tracking website usage
- Cloudflare Turnstile, a spam check on the contact form (only if switched on)
- YouTube, if you watch a linked video
- Reports and resources hosted by others, such as the IFoA website
Managing cookies
You can change your analytics choice at any time with “Cookie settings” in the footer, or install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. You can control or delete cookies in your browser settings. Guidance is available at aboutcookies.org. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may affect how the site works.
